an option for folks who don’t think owning a gun is safe for them

reminder to ppl who don’t feel comfortable owning firearms for mental health reasons that there are lots of other very effective forms of self defense weaponry that you can own that are less of a self harm risk!

some great options:
-aluminum baseball bats
-stun guns/tazers/electrical weapons
-axe/hatchet
-throwing knives
-quality bow & arrow
-crossbow
-spears/poleaxe

self defense doesn’t have to mean guns!

sincerely, your local mentally ill self-defense sweetie 💕

also i didn’t add swords bcs tbh i find them to be kinda overrated for self defense, and the number of really poor quality replica swords out there is high. 9/10 people will do better with a baseball bat (optionally wrapped in wire or with nails) than with a sword. controversial stance, i know.

the sword lesbians can’t cancel me over this take because i am one of them.

@bee adding a bat variant, the fish bat!

- shorter than baseball bat
- has a molded hook on the end of the handle and made for wet boat conditions so it’s got a pretty good grip / stays in the hand
- made specifically to violently damage
- cheap

@bee I know someone with a concealed swordcane...

an option for folks who don’t think owning a gun is safe for them

@bee hell yeah!

to add, pepper/bear spray is a great self defense tool that is easier to conceal and justifiable in many cases.

take away someone's capacity to see you, put them in a ton of pain, and they will stop moving. plus, you can spray from a partially opened door!

re: an option for folks who don’t think owning a gun is safe for them

@tansyfeuilles @bee ideally look for the sprays that are more like a foam than an aerosol, however! especially if you have asthma yourself!

since pepper spray's pretty easy to, uh, y'know, friendly fire as it were

re: an option for folks who don’t think owning a gun is safe for them

@wigglytuffitout @bee learned how it feels to get bear-sprayed the hard way, it was Not fun. my brother got it worse, poor kid. different tools for different problems!

re: an option for folks who don’t think owning a gun is safe for them

@tansyfeuilles @wigglytuffitout @bee Yes! Go for pepper gel if the carrier has resperatory issues. Also I would advise against bear spray because it doesn't concentrate the contaminates trajectory like self-defense pepper spray does. But I get that's all thats available if you live in Canada and stuff.

Also, even if someone does own a gun, they should carry pepper spray/gel or a taser as well. It's good to have an escalation of force.

@wigglytuffitout @tansyfeuilles def an important note, i gave my pepper spray to friends in exchange for a stun gun bcs of this

@bee

The additional benefit in recommending melee weapons for defense is having an honest conversation with yourself about what you are capable of doing to another human being, and why.

I found it both therapeutic and empowering to learn such things about myself, which I explored after I survived a violent crime.

I like to leave *what* I learned out of the conversation, because it makes all the right people nervous.

@bee and remember - when you know what you’re doing, a knife gets you a pistol gets you a shotgun gets you a rifle.

And chemistry+math at Lowe’s/Home Depot gets you artillery.

@bee axes are relatively affordable in the US - like starting at 20 bucks on Home Depot - and there's even some with more functions like a hammer back and can opener etc.

And some even have replaceable parts!

It's a great tool to have overall, highly recommended from someone who researched axes to make this meme in the morning before the chaos:

@bee
Good post but reminds me of my childhood weapons of choice, a small wooden club and a tamagotchi on a lanyard
